The Deuce...Bread and Circuses

It's been three days since we all received our terminal diagnosis and I have refrained from commenting about it until now, hoping that a few days of thoughtful consideration would reveal a strategy I could cling to that had a chance to raise the dead...but I have failed. So, I think, have all the champions of conservatism that have spent the last two days pontificating on the reasons Obama won a second term and what Republicans can do about it in both the near and far term. Their words ring hollow to me, and I believe they are just whistling past the graveyard, unable to accept the paradigm shift that took place in America on November 6, 2012.

‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure. Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader—the barbarians enter Rome.”

                                                       Robert Heinlein

Those of us who opposed Obama in 2008 thought his election was the result of Bush exhaustion, never-ending war in the Middle East, the disastrous economic downturn just before the election, a complicit liberal media, a weak Republican candidate and the desire of many to make history by electing the first black president. While all of those reasons seem to have been true to varying degrees, they hid the underlying, fundamental reason Obama won in 2008...and with the election three days ago, that reason was finally exposed for all to see, whether they accept it or not.

America now has more people dependent upon government for their very existence than it has people who are not, and they will believe anything, vote for any candidate and support any policy or legislation that ensures and enriches their existence.

The "safety net" that began with Social Security some seventy years ago has expanded and morphed into Liberation Democracy...the duty of government to liberate the "oppressed" from whatever and whoever "oppresses" them. And in America  the oppressed suffer at the hands of us who believe in liberty of thought and expression, capitalism, faith, self-reliance, self-restraint, charity and honor. In other words, conservatives.

In today's America conservatism is mocked and ridiculed as the way of the Old White Man...racist, homophobic, misogynist, greedy and cruel. And it's dead. All hail the New American Way!

Both God and Uncle Sam have been replaced by Almighty Sugar Daddy.

Worst of all, four more years of Obama and Liberation Democracy will have so infected America that there can be no coming back. America has finally gone over the proverbial "cliff" and we're all now in free fall...and the landing will be fatal to the former Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, for we are neither any longer.

Conservatism and the traditional way of life will survive in scattered enclaves for awhile. Pockets of like-minded people here and there will continue to send conservatives to Washington and some State Houses, but they will be grossly outnumbered and in the long term will be ineffectual at the national level. We will do what we can, knowing that like the famed 300 Spartans, we are ultimately doomed to fail.

Empty the National Archives of all the founding documents. Take the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the combined works of Washington, Adams, Madison, Franklin, Hamilton and Jefferson, and bury them deep under the Rockies. Perhaps they will be discovered centuries from now by some future generation of people longing to be free. America has little use for them now.

Love your family and friends. Enjoy your life as best you can. Continue to live your values. Pray.

Godspeed.

Sad, but true, well said. Some Republicans seem interested in trying to " reinvent" themselves. No party going forward will win without pandering to either the " Hispanic" vote or the " African American" vote. Many Hispanics are conservative but for many...huge changes in immigration law will be the price that needs paid. Even so, the Media will always paint the Democrats as the heroes and the Republicans as villains. Its hard to be win against such bias. The bottom line is we are screwed. The only chance...and a slim one....would be to migrate to a handful of states and either leave the union....or at least form a Quebec style semi-Independence/quasi autonomy. That seems unlikely but at least possible.
